Dry Needling

Dry needling is a special technique where very fine needles are inserted into very specific points in the skin to relieve aches and pains.

It is predominantly used for the treatment of trigger points and it is based on theories similar, but not exclusive, to traditional acupuncture. It is also sometimes referred to as Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS). A trigger point is a tender spot in a tight band of muscle which causes pain when pressed or squeezed.

Dry needling is often used when problematic areas are too painful for some of the more manual therapies. Our clients who have not previously had dry needling, are usually very pleasantly surprised by the lack of discomfort during dry needling techniques.

What should I expect?

  • At Physio-Wise we only use sterile disposable needles so that there is no chance of cross contamination.
  • The time the needle(s) are left in may vary between 1 minute and 20 minutes.
  • The needles may be gently manipulated to increase the effect.
  • Patients often notice an improvement within hours to a few days; however, several sessions are sometimes needed to notice an improvement.
  • After the treatment you may notice fatigue and deep relaxation, you may also notice a temporary aggravation of the symptom being treated, this is normal.
  • Your physiotherapist will TAILOR the treatment to your specific problem.
