Traction
Traction is a therapeutic technique used in physiotherapy to gently stretch and decompress the spine or joints, relieving pressure and promoting natural healing. It can be manually applied by a physiotherapist or using mechanical devices that provide controlled stretching.
What Does Traction Involve?
There are two main types of traction used in physiotherapy:
Spinal Traction:
- Used to relieve pressure on the spine, particularly for conditions like herniated discs, sciatica, and degenerative disc disease.
- Can be applied manually, where a physiotherapist uses their hands to stretch the spine, or mechanically, where a traction table or device provides controlled decompression.
Cervical Traction:
- Targets the neck area, helping to relieve tension, reduce nerve compression, and improve mobility.
- Commonly used for conditions such as cervical disc injuries, pinched nerves, and chronic neck pain.
How Can Traction Help?
Traction therapy is designed to:
- Relieve Pain - Reduces pressure on compressed nerves, easing discomfort in the neck, back and lower body.
- Improve Mobility - Helps restore movement and flexibility by reducing stiffness and tension in the spine.
- Enhance Spinal Alignment - Corrects minor misalignments that contribute to pain and dysfunction.
- Promote Healing - Encourages nutrient flow to spinal discs, supporting tissue repair and recovery.
- Reduce Muscle Spasms - Gently stretches tight muscles, reducing spasms and improving relaxation.
